Last year, when Swarnalatha underwent life-saving surgery, her family faced numerous adversities. Depression became inevitable during that time. However, amidst the challenges, something wonderful happened. Her children, Gagan (16) and Gaana (11) decided to bring a dog into their lives. They went to a shelter and instantly fell in love with Marble. Although getting a dog seemed like a good idea, Swarnalatha was initially stressed about who would take care of Marble's needs, as she was just five months old at the time. But Gaana and Gagan made a promise to be responsible pet parents. The first few days were tough for both as they struggled with establishing a routine for Marble. They reached out to vets, watched YouTube videos, and spoke to other pet parents to solve even the smallest of issues. However, with time, Gaana, Gagan, and Marble started adapting to each other.
Soon, they transformed into pet parents, waking up at 5:30 am to walk Marble before catching the school bus at 7 am. The most heartbreaking moment was when the kids were ready in their school uniforms and Marble would cry incessantly after they left. She would jump onto Swarnalatha’s bed, seeking comfort and love in her company.
“Marble has brought so much joy into our lives that I found it easier to cope with my depression. Watching her playful antics, zooming around the house, and playing with the kids brought a smile to my face,” shared Swarnalatha adding that their conversations revolved around Marble's food, sleep, farts, and the things she had unintentionally destroyed, like socks, earrings, and toys.
Despite her energetic nature and playful jumps, Marble always knows not to hurt Swarnalatha because she understood her pain. During her physiotherapy sessions and meetings, she stays by her side, not allowing any outsider to come too close. She is fiercely protective of her and cannot tolerate anyone causing her harm.
Marble also became her husband's companion during his walks and visits to the market. He showers her with affection, and they have developed a strong bond. Overall, Marble has become a therapeutic presence not only for her but for the entire family. Her positive energy has transformed their home, and she has brought them all closer together.
The therapeutic benefits of pets in battling depression are undeniable. Their unwavering companionship, ability to establish routines, encouragement of physical activity, and stress-reducing qualities can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals struggling with depression.
