Sleepless Nights? A pet can be your superpower to combat depression

Are you someone coping with depression? Is overthinking stealing your ‘beauty sleep’? Relax! For many of them, the solution is the presence of their furry buddy. Research indicates the incredible health benefits our four-legged friends pamper us during challenging circumstances.

Let us dive straight into Kamli’s miraculous journey of conquering depression with the unwavering support of none other than her four-legged friend, a blue-eyed Labrador Retriever, Risa. Depression is a dangerous foe, that casts a dark shadow over a person’s life, depriving them of motivation, joy and limiting their ability to engage with the world around them.

Kamli’s days felt longer, unproductive, and miserable as opposed to her once vibrant personality. During these challenging moments, Kamli received an invaluable gift from her husband. Risa, was the sole survivor out of the six pups infected by flu. Kamli shares, “I believe Risa is a special gift from above, to help me tackle depression.”

Risa would snuggle against Kamli, during her low moments providing a comforting presence. Kamli recalls, “Risa somehow knew when I needed her the most. Her simple presence made me feel better. She became my reason to get out of bed in the morning, to go for walks, and to confront the world.”

Kamli explains that Risa’s enthusiastic need for walks and playtime pulled her out of the cocoon of isolation spun around her by depression. The walks they took together gave her a reason to step outside, breathe in fresh air, and reconnect with nature. Risa’s excitement was contagious and to witness her run around joyfully constantly reminded her that happiness was effortlessly accessible.

Consistent walks with Risa lead to positive interactions with other pet parents. “I have made friends through Risa that I would not have met otherwise. Having a pet helped me rebuild my social life and reclaim my sense of belonging.” Feeding, training and grooming Risa gave her a sense of responsibility and purpose which in turn took her focus away from her personal struggles.

“Risa was my rock through my darkest nights. Her eyes seemed to convey a message of hope that I desperately needed. In the paws of a loyal friend, I found not just a pet, but a lifeline that pulled me out of darkness into light,” she concluded.
